Calcium Channel Blockers: Brand and Generic Names

Calcium channel blockers, or CCBs, include amlodipine, nifedipine, diltiazem, and verapamil. Their names become easier to organize when you separate the two main groups: dihydropyridines and non-dihydropyridines.

These representative CCB name pairs include both groups. The shared class column does not erase the subgroup distinction shown by the table headings.

Understanding calcium channel blockers

Amlodipine and nifedipine are dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers. Diltiazem and verapamil are non-dihydropyridines. The long subgroup names are worth learning because the short label “CCB” includes both.

Dihydropyridines act mainly on blood vessels. The non-dihydropyridine group also has important effects on the heart. These differences explain why the family is split into two groups; the class label alone is not a guide to exchanging one medicine for another.

A single ingredient can appear in several formulations. Cardizem is associated with diltiazem, but additional letters on a diltiazem product can identify a particular release formulation. Learn the basic pair first, then preserve the full product name when you study a label.

Naming patterns and memory tips

The -dipine ending is useful for amlodipine and nifedipine. It points to the dihydropyridine subgroup, not every calcium channel blocker. A list containing only -dipine names would leave out diltiazem and verapamil.

Use two small groups when practicing: Norvasc and Procardia on one side, Cardizem and Verelan on the other. Then remove the headings and give three answers for each brand: its generic, the CCB family, and its subgroup. This checks whether you know the distinction without relying on the table layout.

Commonly confused calcium channel blocker names

Procardia and Procardia XL

Both connect to nifedipine, but Procardia XL identifies an extended-release tablet. Keep XL when naming that specific product. The short generic name does not describe the release system.

Norvasc and Lotrel

Norvasc contains amlodipine alone. Lotrel combines amlodipine with benazepril, an ACE inhibitor. Its full generic answer therefore crosses two cardiovascular classes.

Diltiazem and diazepam

Cardizem—diltiazem is a calcium channel blocker. Valium—diazepam is a benzodiazepine. The similar opening and ending sounds can distract from the different middle letters and completely different class associations.
